Job Summary Statement

The Apprentice Nursing Student works under a supervising licensed nurse serving in the role of mentor.
The responsibilities of the Apprentice Nursing Student include providing direct patient care and maintaining patient care standards.
The Apprentice Nursing Student must exhibit the ability to work with people form diverse socio-economic backgrounds; to organize, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Provides basic and select advanced nursing care to patients within the Apprentice Nursing Students scope of practice and under the supervision of a licensed nurse that includes actions that meet psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and physical needs of the patient.
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients age, gender, socioeconomic status, education, physical and mental abilities, and racial and ethnic background.
Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
Provides explanation to patients and families prior to administering care, answers questions within scope of practice.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function appropriately in stressful situations.
Responds to patients in emergency or physically distressing situations.
Documentation meets current standards and policies.
Assumes accountability for appropriate utilization of resources.
Performs other duties as assigned, within the Apprentice Nursing Students scope of practice.
Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience/Skills Requirements
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma/GED required.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
Enrolled in a Board approved nursing education program.
Actively engaged in a registered apprenticeship
Has obtained a Student Nurse Apprentice permit issued from the Alabama Board of Nursing
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
BLS required before the conclusion of the orientation period.
