POSITION: Director, Regional Early Acquisition of Language (REAL) ABOUT ALABAMA INSTITUTE FOR DEAF AND BLIND The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind and multidisabled and their families.
Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 36,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.
Our services literally span a lifetime, from birth to senior adulthood.
AIDB includes five campuses in Talladega, ten regional centers located in Birmingham, Decatur, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Opelika, Talladega, Tuscaloosa and Muscle Shoals with programs that range from early and senior intervention to traditional and nontraditional education services in residential and outreach settings and a manufacturing facility that is the state’s largest employer of adults who are blind and deaf.
About the Position: The Regional Early Acquisition of Language (REAL) Trainer reports to the REAL Director.
This position has major responsibilities in project planning, developing, organizing, presenting, mentoring parents, professionals and medical professionals who diagnose and identify children who are deaf/hard of hearing and managing the budget.
The REAL project is a national effort currently established in two regions established with two more regional centers in development.
REAL South, located at AIDB is the premiere agency working in collaboration with the Laurent Clerc Center at Gallaudet University.
REAL West is currently established and in the coming years, REAL East and REAL Midwest will be established.
These four regions will work together to provide a national training and professional development effort focused on Early Language Acquisition.
This position guides and directs all aspects of the REAL South project.
This includes, writing and overseeing day to day operations, planning, and executing trainings as well as providing technical assistance, and makes policy recommendations to the Executive Director of Special Projects to ensure compliance with all rules mandated by the US Department of Education, the Laurent Clerc Center at Gallaudet University, AIDB policies and procedures as well as all state and federal regulations.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible to assist the Executive Director in all matters of administration and operation of the REAL Project, which includes supervision and management, educational leadership and coordination, finance and budget development, monitoring and reporting associated with REAL.
The REAL Director is a leader in the implementation of services outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding with Gallaudet University.
This position develops and implements policies, processes, and best practices, and provides project-wide leadership and direction for staff and consultants.
Additionally, the REAL Director works with stakeholders including state leaders, medical service providers, early childhood personnel, service providers, local lead agencies across the region and country.
Major decision-making includes: Assist in the overall development and monitoring of REAL Project budgets.
A leader in the grant development process.
Supports REAL project direction by developing grant goals, implementing systems to meet goals identified through grant development as well as working with the Clerc Center to ensure services are provided with fidelity following best practices.
Review and analyze all practices of the REAL project, identify issues, challenges, and provide recommendations for improvement to the Executive Director.
Oversee REAL budget, support services and consultation staff and contracts.
Provide recommendations for hiring new REAL project staff to the Executive Director Comprehensive understanding of public school, educational service district and state budgeting and funding in order to seek fiscal supports from the Clerc Center as needed Meet all deadlines, reporting requirements, budget monitoring and state needs as required by the grant and meeting agency needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide REAL project management, organization, guidance and leadership.
Guide the development and management of implementation of services at the local level as articulated in the REAL project.
Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures related to the REAL project in compliance with state and federal rules and regulations and agency requirements.
Supervise and evaluate personnel as designated by the Executive Director.
Develop and foster support services and promote teaming between project staff and community partners at the federal, state and local level.
Foster a positive relationship with community partners, state leaders and first responders.
Evaluate and select research activities which involve staff, local and regional service providers to positively impact language acquisition for children while supporting parents.
Promote and honor diversity.
Oversee the overall development and monitoring of project budgets.
Work with the executive director and other leaders to develop and implement goals, objectives and activities to support the REAL project and capture data showing growth in the area of language access and tools for parents to make an informed choice.
Maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct.
Assure compliance with applicable laws, policies and procedures.
Use technology effectively.
Good conflict resolution and team building skills.
Support staff and other professional development for community partners across the state, region and nation by providing meaningful training opportunities.
Serve as a liaison between REAL project staff and other agency staff and other community partners.
Promote good public relations and always represent REAL in a positive manner.
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or supervisor.
Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in School Administration, Education, Special Education, Deaf Education, or related field Alabama State Administrator Certification, Alabama State Teacher Certification or a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies: Infants, Toddlers and their Families (ITF) Five years’ working in the field of Early Intervention for Deaf and Hard of Hearing or DeafBlind children and their families.
Three years’ experience in educational administration A sign language proficiency level of INTERMEDIATE according to the AIDB evaluation system is required upon hire.
A sign language proficiency level of ADVANCED must be obtained within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
Must provide recent documentation of sign language proficiency (SLPI) or take a sign language proficiency evaluation (SLPI) available through AIDB.
Ability to communicate effectively both in written English and ASL.
Knowledge of special education laws, current trends and best practices relating to the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing children Knowledge of current research in educational leadership Strong collaboration skills with state and national agencies to expand state and local resources to meet the unique needs of deaf and hard of hearing, and deaf-blind students and the service providers who support them.
Ability to lead, guide, coach, and train staff.
Ability to interpret laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
Ability to clearly and effectively communicate with a wide variety of individuals and groups to include executive management, staff, students and parents, the public and other stakeholders.
Ability to facilitate small and large group meetings.
Ability to interpret and comply with pertinent collective bargaining agreements.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow a high standard of ethics.
Ability to develop, communicate and measure goals accurately.
